We’re excited to announce the beginning of a new brewing project! In partnership with Patagonia Provisions, the food and beverage division of outdoor apparel company Patagonia, we’re implementing the use of an organic and regenerative perennial grain know as Kernza® to positively impact both agriculture and the environment. The plant’s deep roots and long life help to improve soil health and can draw down more carbon into the soil than typical annual grains.
Last summer, Patagonia Provisions launched its pilot brewery partnership program with independent craft breweries across the U.S., each brewing regional-specific beers made with Regenerative Organic Certified Kernza® and other organic ingredients.
We’re proud to join Patagonia Provisions and twenty other breweries in a movement to scale regenerative and organic ingredients that improve soil health, restore ecosystems, and promote a sustainable food chain.
“This is our first time brewing with this unique grain,” says our co-founding brother and brewmaster John Trogner. “Fifteen percent of the grain bill is Kernza®, which we combine with organic Pilsner malt to build a crisp backbone.”
Lightly hopped with organic Perle hops, this easy-drinking 4.2% ABV lager displays notes of rustic crackers, bright wildflowers, and a touch of grassiness.
“Over the past 26 years, Tröegs has grown tremendously but always remained true to its core values of independence and family ownership,” says Paul Lightfoot, Patagonia Provisions General Manager. “They support their local farmers in central Pennsylvania, buying more than 225,000 pounds of local grain, honey and fruit every year.”
You can only get Kernza® Lager on draft in our Tasting Room, so swing by the brewery to try this delicious new beer!
