Remember Scratch #500? We sure do! It was an amped-up version of iconic Perpetual IPA, and it was a huge hit with our regular brewery customers… so much so that we decided to make it available for the masses. Enter Double Perpetual IPA, a bigger, bolder version of our best-selling year-round beer.
Now part of our rotating Once-a-Year series, Double Perpetual stands tall next to popular Tröegs beers like Mad Elf, Nugget Nectar, and Nimble Giant.
For Double Perpetual, we dove deeper into the artisanal-meets-mechanical hop state of IPA. Cycling through copious amounts of Cascade, Chinook, Nugget and Citra hops, this bigger, bolder West Coast-style ale boasts sticky notes of citrus, pine and tropical fruit.
Like many of our beers, Double Perpetual came up through our small-batch Scratch Series, where we experiment with ingredients and techniques to build the perfect beer for Tröegs.
“One of the ways we share our creative process is through our Scratch Series,” says our brewmaster John Trogner. “Over the years, it’s served as a testing ground for potential new beers, and one of the first ones to come out of the Scratch Series was Perpetual IPA.”
After half a dozen Scratch batches, John and our brewing team finally landed on the recipe that would become Perpetual IPA, one of our most recognizable beers.
“It’s hard to imagine Tröegs without Perpetual, but there was a time when we didn’t brew an IPA. Then, Citra hops came along, so we said, ‘Why not?’”
