This Thursday, for the first time in more than a decade, you can get your hands on a much-loved Scratch beer here at Tröegs – Van de Hoorn.

Van de Hoorn is a favorite of a guy called Tom, seen in this video from 2015. Tom was one of the original volunteers–turned-co-workers who helped get Tröegs off the ground.

“He was one of those guys who would do anything for the brewery,” says founding brother John Trogner. “Festival, event, packaging run … whatever it was, he’d drop it all to come help. There’s not a lot of people like Tom.”

Van de Hoorn (Dutch for “from the horn”) starts just like Troegenator – with chocolate, Munich and Pilsner malts. The twist comes in fermentation. Rather than using ‘Nator’s lager yeast, we use Mad Elf’s spicy Belgian yeast, giving Van de Hoorn hints of cinnamon, clove and allspice and fermenting to 8.2% ABV. The last time we brewed Van de Hoorn was Scratch #24 back in 2009. This version is Scratch #433!

A limited draft-only batch is coming Thurs/April 15, only at Tröegs. We haven’t seen Tom for a while, but we have a feeling we’ll be seeing him soon. We hope to see you for Van de Hoorn, too!
