If you’ve visited our brewery over the last year, you may recall witnessing a pretty substantial construction project under way. Well, the time has come to open a new chapter for our Hershey, PA, brewery. One year after we broke ground on a 15,000-square-foot addition to our packaging hall, we’re happy to report that cans of fresh Tröegs beer are now rolling off our state-of-the-art line… and at record speeds!
To learn the ins-and-outs of the equipment, we sent ten of our co-workers across the country to take notes from the manufacturers of our new can filler, box maker and conveyor systems.
“Having our packaging and maintenance teams get first-hand knowledge has been vital to the installation and fine tuning of each piece of equipment,” says our brewmaster and co-founding brother John Trogner.
Prior to the expansion, our bottling and canning lines shared the same conveyors and palletizer. Now, we can fill and package cans and bottles simultaneously, which means we can bring more beer to the masses!
“Our new line increases the production speed, capacity, and quality of our canned beer,” says Tröegs co-founding brother Chris Trogner. “We’ll also have the flexibility to work in some new pack types.”
In addition to can wraps for 12-oz. 6-packs and 16-oz. 4-packs, we’re excited to offer three Tröegs year-round favorites in 19.2-oz. cans – a first for us! Perpetual IPA is currently rolling out to all markets as we speak, and both Troegenator and Sunshine Pilsner aren’t far behind. Soon, you’ll be able to find these larger cans of beer at a variety of sporting events, concerts and festivals as well as in convenience stores across our distribution footprint.
And if you’ve caught wind of our new Canthology variety packs, then you probably know that our packaging hall expansion coincides with the addition of a variety-case packer. Located at our warehouse and logistics center in nearby Elizabethtown, PA, this new piece of equipment allows us to build all of our variety packs in-house.
“Ultimately, we’re positioning ourselves to be nimble,” says Chris. “The new canning line really just sets us up for success in the future.”
