We were daydreaming. Feeling the warm sun, counting the wispy clouds and craving our bright seasonal IPA. And that vibrant sky spoke to us. That daydream resulted in our bright and slightly hazy Field Study Summer IPA.

Inspired by our annual trip to Washington state’s Yakima Valley for hop selection, Field Study began life like most of our beers do – through our small-batch Scratch Series.

“Field Study started with Scratch #327, when we first began tinkering with some new hopping techniques,” explains our brewmaster and co-founding brother John Trogner.

After several trials, our brewing team landed on a hop combination of Citra, Mosaic, and El Dorado to deliver the notes of ripe grapefruit, pear, and melon they were looking to achieve.

And did you know that Field Study starts with a portion of malted barley grown and harvested right in our own backyard? During the recipe development phase, we landed on a grain bill featuring local Rustic Pale Malt. We found just what we were looking for thanks to farmer Glenn Miller of Powells Valley, just north of Harrisburg. Our friends at Double Eagle Malt near Philadelphia kilned the barley slightly higher than most pale malts to amplify the complex cereal and slightly nutty notes. It was a rewarding experience to shepherd this beer from grain to glass with the help of our neighbors right here in our home state of PA.

“We like using local ingredients because it’s easy to try them,” says Trogner. “It’s fun to go out the fields, get our hands a little dirty, and taste the raw ingredients before we use them in a beer.”

With a bright flavor profile, low bitterness, and 6.2% ABV, Field Study appeals to both IPA fans and non-IPA drinkers alike.

“It’s one of those beers that as soon as you crack it, the aroma hits you,” says Trogner.
